Founder & President
Rabbi Moshe Margaretten founded Tzedek Association after years of visiting prisons, supporting incarcerated individuals, and helping families affected by incarceration. Under his leadership, Tzedek has worked with Congress, the White House, the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and leaders from both political parties to advance meaningful reform, protect religious liberty, and deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance.
His work has helped shape landmark criminal justice legislation, expand opportunities for second chances, protect the religious rights of incarcerated individuals, and deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance in the United States and abroad.

Hugh J. Hurwitz is the former Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and a nationally recognized expert in corrections, prison management, reentry, and First Step Act implementation.

Ja’Ron Smith is a national policy expert and former senior White House advisor who played an instrumental role in the passage of the First Step Act.

Matthew McNally brings extensive congressional, federal affairs, campaign, and advocacy experience to Tzedek’s bipartisan policy work.

Rebecca Taxman has advanced religious accommodations, rehabilitative programming, sentencing reform, and humane conditions within New York correctional systems.
